%C%Loading CSV Files

[I'm sure that, at one time or another, you will have wanted to load a
'CSV' format file into PipeDream - Bill Mapleson's findings are - GLF]
1. If the file contains double quotes (e.g. "a b","c","b20",
"123456") and I drag it into an existing PipeDream Sheet,
it goes in as text, even if the Options are set to "Number".
2. If the file does not contain double quotes, dragging it
into an open sheet puts it all in column A.
3. If I make the file TSV (tab separated value) instead of
CSV (comma separated value), but without double quotes,
dragging it into an open Sheet, produces text, even if
the Options are set to "Number".
4. If I open a menu over an empty sheet, in which I have set
options to "Text", and select "Load" and "Auto" (of a CSV
file without double quotes), PipeDream opens a new sheet,
and puts each line, with its commas, into column A.
5. If I open a menu over an empty sheet, in which I have set
options to "Text", and select "Load" and "CSV" (of a CSV
file without double quotes), PipeDream opens a new sheet,
with the default options which, in my present set up,
include "Number" - with the result that the data goes
into the right columns but B20 is interpreted as a slot
reference and 123456 is interpreted as a number.
6. If I open a menu over an empty sheet, in which I have set
options to "Text", and select "Load" and "Auto" (of a CSV
file with double quotes), PipeDream opens a new sheet,
with the default options ("Number") but the data goes
into the right columns as text.
7. If a CSV file has double quotes on some items and not on
others it seems that, with either dragging or loading,
PipeDream "tries" to guess what I intended - but doesn't
always read my mind correctly!
However, it seems clear that consistent use of either double quotes or
tabs forces text entry, whatever the Options setting.
